EMR software for South African practices

Practiq is a cloud EMR built around the patient rather than the appointment slot. Records are structured, versioned and audit-logged. An AI scribe drafts notes from the patient's whole history and cites the source of every sentence, and prescriptions are checked against active medications and allergies before you sign.

What a good EMR gives you

  • One longitudinal chart. Every encounter, active condition, medication, allergy and observation in one place, not scattered across scanned PDFs.
  • Notes that write themselves, safely. The scribe drafts SOAP notes, prescriptions and referrals; you review and sign. Click any sentence to see the transcript segment or prior note it came from.
  • Safety checks. Before you sign a prescription, Practiq checks it against the patient's active medications, documented allergies and recent results, using a curated catalogue rather than the AI's memory.
  • Forms and e-signing. Intake, consent and questionnaires completed by the patient, stored as PDFs with verifiable signature hashes.
  • An audit trail. Every view and change is logged, which is what you need when a patient or the Information Regulator asks who accessed a record.

EMR, EHR and practice management

An EMR holds the clinical record. Practice management covers bookings, reminders and billing. Practiq does both, so the consultation, the note and the invoice are linked. Read more about practice management software.

Security and POPIA

Health information is special personal information under POPIA. Practiq isolates each practice's data, logs access, and acts as your operator under a written Data Processing Addendum. See our security overview and the guide to POPIA for medical practices.

Questions

What is an EMR?

An electronic medical record (EMR) is the digital version of a patient's chart within one practice: history, consultation notes, diagnoses, medications, allergies, results and documents. EHR (electronic health record) usually refers to records shared across providers.

What should I look for in EMR software in South Africa?

Structured notes you can search, an audit log of every access and change, role-based access, POPIA-compliant hosting and data handling, record retention that meets HPCSA guidance, and billing that uses ICD-10 and tariff codes.

Is cloud EMR software allowed under POPIA?

Yes. POPIA allows a practice to use a cloud provider as its operator, provided there is a written agreement requiring the provider to keep the information secure and confidential. Practiq's Data Processing Addendum covers this.

Can I move my existing patient records into Practiq?

Yes. Contact us with what you use today and we will help you plan the import of patient demographics and history.
